What a fantastic weekend of skiing in the Lake Tahoe region. In the past week we have received more than 50 inches of new snow with more on the way.
It all started Friday morning at Alpine Meadows Ski Resort. Check out a little video I made to give you a sense of the conditions.
Turn your speakers on.
I intermixed some photos I took at Alpine last year just to make the video a little more interesting.
As usual, I was shooting in really poor light conditions with my Canon A620. Still, for a compact little digital camera that also has video with audio capabilities, it is a nice little companion. It is already difficult enough to get my friends to hold still on a powder day. Carrying and protecting a large camera in cold, snowy, windy conditions would make it even harder.
I am waiting for a camcorder that is small and compact, offers excellent video quality, saves to a hard drive, and also allows you to take high resolution pictures. Come on Canon or Sony, you can do it!
On Saturday, I did some backcountry in a place I cannot reveal, and today I went over to my backyard resort, Mt Rose Ski Resort. It was quite windy and snowing heavily, but the powder was endless and I skied as long as my body would allow me.
I hope everyone else had a wonderful weekend!
Awesome video, but dammit, quit promoting this place as something people will enjoy. In fact, can you box it up and put it under your bed for safe keeping?
My debate with “Not on the Web Guy” on my previous ski post did prompt me to more carefully consider the areas I highlight. Places like ski resorts are well-known, but backcountry areas that I explore to get away from crowds are different. In the future, you will find that I won’t be specific about places that are off the beaten path. I will still show images and video from these places as long as they do not reveal where the location is. Of course, I will have to see how it goes. If I capture something that is unique and exceptional, in my opinion, it could prove difficult to bury in my own personal archives. I will just have to approach it on a case-by-case basis.
Wow, that was so cool. That’s how I WANT to ski powder! The RSCVA should totally be contracting with you for pics and videos. At minimum, that video should be on their blog! I think many people this week will be calling in sick to take advantage of the snow… Unfortunately, I’ve taken a lot of sick time, so I’ll have to go up with the hoards of people on the weekend!!! I swear, the Chutes better open this weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Lynnette!
The Chutes looked ready to me on Sunday…and now another 2ft. It’s time!!!
What’s up with witholding the location of your backcountry locale? Very cool video. The new Sony Handycams aren’t too bad – miniDV. And I think Panasonic is coming out with a minicam that writes to disk – may have already.
Oh, and nice backflip!@!!!!!!
Awesome!!! Too bad you don’t have your teles on 😉
And by the way Lynnette – this is on the RSCVA blog – at least a link. We need you and Robert back blogging. With a baby on a backpack my posts are not the same.
Vanina — You’re right… Perhaps I can post about some adrenaline pumping on the Chutes! This snow season really hasn’t been worth blogging about until the past few weeks!
That was some fearless skiing. Nice footage.
